Creative Arts Therapist (Music)

Administer and interpret music therapy assessments and utilize clinical knowledge to develop unconventional assessment and interview approaches in order to effectively elicit information. Review pre-evaluation data in the medical record upon admission or through consult conduct, analyze, interpret and report assessment data across functional domains. Plan, organize, and implement developmentally and situationally, appropriate and evidence-based comprehensive music therapy interventions for persons diagnosed with chronic or life-threatening conditions, as well as their families and in collaboration with an interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary team. Recommend and develop new treatment groups and programs (including co-treatment opportunities) for treating patients with complex medical, behavioral, or mental health issues such as but not limited to Dementia, Parkinson, PTSD, and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) to develop or promote a variety of clinical outcomes such as improved coping with grief, loss, palliative care/terminal illness, behavior management, conflict resolution, self-expression or non-verbal communication of difficult subject matter. Participate in other difficult work in co-treatment opportunities including neurological rehabilitation, physical rehabilitation, mental health recovery programs, and palliative care related to the symptoms of a terminal illness. Plan, organize, implement and evaluate public relations for the program in order to inform and educate others about music therapy in various settings including the complex interactions of the therapeutic process as well as the efficacy of music therapy in complex cases. Implements and modifies treatment plan and goals compatible to patient functional capacity as necessary to assure optimum outcome. Perform documentation of patient care, including progress notes, daily attendance/encounters, and reports (monthly, safety, and others), as needed. Demonstrate competency in knowledge of electronic documentation and computer skills and completion of all patient care documentation, encounters, and scheduling according to VA, facility, policies, guideline, and standards. Maintains personal professional competence through participation in appropriate educational activities. Assist in teaching and providing learning experiences for Music Therapy, Creative Arts Therapy, and Recreation Therapy students. Participates in staff orientation and in-service activities. Maintains professional currency and competencies in testing and evaluation procedures and practices and introduces new state of the art methods as appropriate. Maintain and enhance professional/technical skills and knowledge through relevant continuing education activities. Complete all statistical and administrative reports according to Recreation Therapy Service and Medical Center Policies. Collect, compile, maintain, and/or track statistical records and information for the completion of required reports and in support of service operations. Provide input to the Supervisor on equipment and personnel needs in recreation therapy. Review, provide input, and make recommendations on supply and equipment acquisition and personnel needs in recreation therapy. Identify & recommend solutions to supervisor for problems, such as safety, time management, customer service, etc. Work Schedule:

A bachelor's degree or higher, from an accredited college or university, in music therapy, or in music with an emphasis in music therapy. The degree must be approved by the National Association for Schools of Music and/or the American Music Therapy Association. OR, A bachelor's degree or higher, from an accredited college or university, and must be a board-certified music therapist (MT-BC) approved by the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT). If hired under this education, the certification cannot be waived. Foreign Education:
To be creditable, education completed outside the U.S. must have been submitted to a private organization that specializes in the interpretation of foreign educational credentials. The private organization must deem such education at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. programs. For GS-11:

Knowledge of the roles and meaning of music in various cultures and subcultures, how culture influences identity formation, concepts of health and pathology, and understanding of the role of music therapy and how music therapy is practiced. Knowledge of current methods of music therapy assessment, treatment, and evaluation related to human growth and development, musical development, diagnostic classifications, etiology, symptomatology, and prognosis in formulating complex treatment plans, including the contraindications of music therapy for individuals and groups. Ability to design, develop, or adapt unique music therapy methods for assessment, treatment or palliation, and evaluation procedures for complex clinical cases, through a broad range of specialized music therapy services for various and emerging patient populations. Ability to use music therapy interventions to provide opportunities to work through treatment issues, including emotional disturbances, by establishing a safe environment for the patient to understand the symbolic expression of their musical product, process, and experience as it relates to recovery and wellness. Ability to apply effective use of professional skill, objectivity, and insight to respond constructively to both positive and negative reactions, establish and maintain a therapeutic relationship with professional boundaries to reflect trusting, empathetic, and respectful interactions. Ability to apply current research literature and co-facilitate treatment with professionals from other disciplines, the uses of the creative arts therapies and recreation therapy, as well as understanding emerging models and trends in music therapy. Must be proficient in spoken and written English, as required by 30 USC 740 (d), and 7407 (d). Therapy is provided in numerous locations throughout the medical center and in the community. The work may require specific physical characteristics and abilities such as above-average dexterity to perform intricate therapeutic procedures. The physical limitations of the young adult, middle adult, and the geriatric patient must be taken into consideration when performing all assigned responsibilities. Incumbent will meet and maintain physical and drug test program requirements for the position as required. This position frequently requires moderate to heavy lifting. Normally such lifting will involve but not limited to assisting with transfers or mobility training of the patient in various recreation therapy and creative arts therapy clinics and other settings. This position will also require regular and recurring physical exertion such as standing or walking for prolonged periods of time; frequent bending, reaching, stooping, and stretching to set up and take apart equipment and apparatus; lifting and repositioning Veterans; handling wheelchairs, and pushing or pulling heavy objects. Additional physical demands include:
pushing, pulling, shifting Veterans, retrieving, standing, pivoting, twisting, squatting, turning, grasping, extending, balancing, casting, throwing, stretching, reaching, dodging, striking, lifting, turning, carrying, swinging, creative movement, and dragging; positioning severely disabled Veterans, and assisting Veterans in transfers, and/or ambulation at times; there may be undue heavy lifting due to unforeseen circumstances such as preventing a Veteran from falling; maintaining patient safety is of the utmost priority at all times. This position will also require dexterity and skill in safe machinery techniques and to lift, handle and operate various supplies and equipment needed by the Service. This position will also require pushing wheelchair Veterans on level and incline ground. This position will also involve sedentary work involving computers and communications. This position may also involve driving an automobile and/or wheelchair accessible van and going in and out of variety of settings in the community. This position will also require working in warm (92 degrees) water and high air (100 degrees) temperatures. There may be intermittent exposure to blood and body fluids. Must have physical ability to perform duties.

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
